It was that time of year when Pang valley Ramblers packed up their boots (and waterproofs!!) for their annual Autumn Walking Break. This year it was to Limpley Stoke, near Bath.
We all met up on Sunday afternoon for a short walk. The weather was ok, but we were not taking any chances so waterproofs were donned. Gordon & Sue led us on a pleasant afternoon walk to Monkton Combe along the Midford Brook. Some walkers opted for the shorter version of 2.8 miles, others completed 4.6 miles. We realised that we could have a muddy few days ahead to us, as the river was breaking its banks!
On Monday morning we woke to the forecast of a very wet day ahead. Full wet weather gear was the order for the day. Despite the rain, mud and flooded fields, we enjoyed a walk from Limpley Stoke to Bradford on Avon, stopping to enjoy the medieval Tithe Barn at Barton Farm Country Park. We lost some walkers here, due to poor weather conditions. They preferred to explore Bradford on Avon and meet up later, at the pub for lunch, taking the local bus. The rest of us continued, through torrential rain at times, but with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The New Inn, for lunch, was a pleasing sight, for those that chose to continue walking. We dried out and all enjoyed the pre-ordered lunch. It was still raining and unfortunately many decided not to continue. Some headed back to the hotel while others explored Bradford on Avon, where it was evident the locals were expecting the river to flood later that day. The remaining 10 walkers continued on foot for another 5 miles back to Limpley Stoke, via Farleigh Hungerford and Iford Manor. The going was tough at times, as the river had burst its banks in places, but detours were found. Everyone returned to the hotel to dry out, after a good walk despite the challenges encountered.
Tuesday’s weather looked promising. But we were not taking any risks and everyone again donned wet weather gear. But soon layers were being discarded as the sun shone and we were soon feeling warm. We started by walking along the canal to the Dundas Aqueduct. Very soggy underfoot, the weather was slightly overcast but improved as the day progressed. The group separated, at various times to explore the American Museum with its quilting exhibition, or the city of Bath. Others decided to make their way back to the hotel by bus. The days walk from Limpley Stoke via Dundas Aqueduct, Calverton, Bath University, City of Bath and returning along the canal was approximately 11 miles.
It was a very enjoyable few days. Lots of laughter despite the weather. Once again, Gordon and Sue had done a wonderful job of organising the trip, and researching the area; devising and leading the walks.
