5 October 2012 Autumn Walking Weekend, Dunster

The Autumn Walking Weekend could have been renamed the Gastronomic Weekend, such was the food on offer at the Luttrell Arms Hotel in Dunster and the Pub lunches.

Despite indifferent weather on the Friday afternoon, 19 members enjoyed a short walk taking in the lovely Dunster Village and surrounding countryside.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny and we walked from Wootton Courtenay to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor. Awaiting us at the top were superb views of Exmoor, Dartmoor and the Welsh Coast. Heavy overnight rain had made some paths tricky with an impassable ford so a more arduous route had to be taken to the lunch stop at Wheddon Cross.

The Sunday walk started from the hotel and took in Dunster Park, Gallox Hill viewpoint and the Tall Trees trail where necks were craned to see the tallest tree in England.

We were able to sit outside in the sunshine to enjoy lunch at Timberscombe, some continuing on a walk back to Dunster, others starting the journey home.
