On Saturday 14th June, after a night storm that seemed endless, nine members of the Pang Valley Ramblers somehow managed to get to Luton in time to board the 6.50am flight to Slovenia.
Our Wizz Air flight departed on schedule and by midday we had checked into to our hotel at Bohinj Bistrica and we had the afternoon free to explore the village.
What a pleasure it was to be in this beautiful corner of the former Yugoslavia! We received a warm welcome from all the locals we met. The next morning we were out to explore the lower reaches of the Alps, with our two local guides David and Katya. They are wonderful young ambassadors for their country; they encouraged and helped us during the week with some challenging climbs to waterfalls, wild flower meadows and a climb to a height of 2003m (we were told that travel insurance only covered us to 2000m!). Lunches were taken at mountain huts with Mountain Goulash washed down with a local brew of a sweet tea made from herbs collected from the fields. Lake Bled was another delight as they only allow electric powered motor boats. Yes, Slovenia is full of surprises! We couldn’t fault the hospitality and the sheer delight of the experience.
