Coach trip and walking around Bourton-on-the-Water.
The weather forecast for that week had been very unpromising, torrential rain the day before and rain threatened for the actual day but miraculously, we escaped any precipitation and it was a typical summer’s day, sunshine, a bit of cloud, a breeze….all we could ask for!
Twenty three of us had signed up and twenty two arrived in Bourton, armed with maps and a brochure of “things to do”. Sadly one person had forgotten, next time we will send out last minute reminders…. we have to sign up and pay so long ahead, it is easy to forget. Four intrepid 10 milers disembarked outside Bourton for a walk through Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter and Naunton, where there was a pub stop, then back down the valley to Bourton. The rest of us parked in Bourton, it was good to be able to have access to the coach all day. Eight set off on a five mile walk through the Nature Reserve to Wyck Rissington. We stopped at the church where Holst had been organist at the age of 17 and admired the maze – not a Hampton Court style of maze, but a ceramic picture of a maze, much to our disappointment. We continued through beautiful meadows, rich in wild flowers, including orchids back to the village in time for a late lunch. Some chose just to potter for the day, and it is a good village to potter in with a variety of shops (ranging from stylish to tat), museums, restaurants, pubs and a general holiday feel with the Queen’s birthday bunting and the attractive River Windrush flowing through the village.
