The weather forecast for our week away in mid May was not good. I was prompted to check my waterproof kit, and debate how many layers/changes of clothes would be needed. My misgivings were kept in check by the excitement of a visit to a new part of the world, including a new-to me stretch of coast the break from pandemic life, with the congenial company of walking friends would be good.
The holiday turned out well. Larpool Hall, the Holiday Fellowship Country House Hotel, offered all we needed. There was a boot room to dry wet stuff, knowledgeable walk leaders had planned a range of walks following preparatory discussion with Pang Valley leaders. Pandemic arrangements were sensible. Comfortable accommodation, good food, meeting up with friends and the beautiful situation combined to make the holiday start immediately on arrival.
I had not anticipated the magnificent variety of landscape – moor, gentle river valley countryside varied coast and a fascinating historic seaside town. There was lots to tempt one to explore outside the walk programme. I did two days with our walk leaders, the ‘off-piste days’ included a planned day out with my sister who I had not seen for a year, visits to the RSPB cliff of sea birds, and visiting the excellent Captain Cook Museum where I felt in awe of his cartographic skills.
Yes it was extremely wet on the Friday, but it was a good holiday. If there is a next time I will consider carefully whether to stay an extra day or two to avoid tricky decisions about scheduled walks or off-piste activity. Many thanks to the leaders for such a stimulating and enjoyable holiday when we needed it.
