This was our first HF Holiday with PVR and possibly not our last!! Our journey was uneventful until nearing York when we encountered a traffic holdup.
We thought tune in to a local station for an update, after a couple of seconds we heard….Ayup here t’traffic report ..we knew we were in Yorkshire.
On arrival at Larpool Hall we easily checked in and found our room to be spacious and with a bath & shower. It was then a sit down to review the menus for the week and decide what we would eat in the evenings. Hmmm choice OK but not great. Then the fun of what to have for the next days packed lunch.
Breakfast went well and then the packed lunch arrived, it was like a children’s party bag but no jelly in fact for some no Jaffa Cake. Regrettably the packed lunches did vary and for some Green Cabbage in place of lettuce is something I’ve never come across. Must be a Yorkshire thing. Yuk.
The walks overall were well mapped out and walked at a decent pace. One of first walks was along the Cleveland Way to the Abbey where a film crew were allegedly doing a documentary. If only we were told the truth that it was not a documentary being filmed but that Coldplay were playing at the Abbey for one day/night only.
So the breakfast , packed lunches, evening meals & walks continued each with their own challenges not least the night of the uncooked Southern Fried Chicken. After the evening meals there was always the bar to look forward to, the local beers & gins along with the wine & soft drinks. Alas as the week went on the local gins & couple of the beers ran dry but at least there were substitutes.
Also a first for me anyhow, was a proper boot room. Here you could leave boots, socks, coats etc to dry out & the following day choose a whole new set for the next walk!!
Then on the fifth day, Friday, some of us joined a small guided walks around part of Whitby and its history. It was on this walk that we noticed 2 of our compatriots with a carton of Fish & Chips as they settled down to savour Whitby finest they almost lost all to the seagull. They promptly moved into the bandstand where they thought nothing could get at their treasure, we crept upon then & were so close to taking a chip when the speed of John was too quick for us but what a laugh.
Sadly Saturday arrived and some of us departed Larpool with others staying on for a few more nights, hope the food improved? Overall a good break after all the time suffered by the Covid Lockdown & one that will stay in the memory.
