A full day walk from Orpington to Hayes stations in Kent via Downe village and Down House, home of Charles Darwin.

The original rationale of this walk was to repeat one undertaken on June 18th, 1892. On that occasion a co-leader was William Erasmus Darwin, the first son of the famous Charles.  The Victorian walkers (over 120) were entertained to tea at Down House by Charles’s widow Emma Darwin.  Continue reading »

Down House, Orpington, Kent Saturday 23rd June 2018

Down House was the home of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin for most of his life. Peter Worsley, our walk leader, has a special interest in Darwin. We will either assemble in the booking hall on the arrivals (east) side at ORPINGTON railway station by 10.30am or members may wish to travel together from Reading. All stations are within Zone 6, so a London Travelcard from Reading will cover all public transport. Continue reading »
