Walking in Berkshire, Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley
Pang Valley Ramblers first social event of 2015 will be a Fish and Chip Supper including a General Knowledge Quiz. It will be held at Pangbourne Village Hall (where there is ample free parking) on Friday 6th February. Doors will be open at 7.00pm; the quiz will start at 7.30pm and a fish and chip supper (vegetarian option available) will be served during the interval. Continue reading

The latest news on the re-opening of Whitchurch Bridge is that the bridge company is planning to re-open the bridge to road traffic some time in September 2014. However there are still risks in the work programme and as these are resolved there will be further updates on the re-opening date.
This means that if you need to cross the Thames to get to any of the walks in our September to November Programme you may need to allow extra time going via Goring or Reading.

There is a course organised by one of the East Berks Group Walk Leaders which should help to improve OS map reading, and compass work. It will also cover basic leadership, so that in time the participants will be able to lead walks. This course should make them confident to read a local map, and find their way in normal weather conditions. (He does not propose to teach how to walk across Dartmoor in a fog!). Following on from the enjoyable BBQ last year we have decided to try a slightly different format this summer: a picnic. This will be on Sunday 27 July 2014. The walk will start at 10.30 am from Upper Basildon Village Hall where there is a large car park. The 4-5 mile rambling route will take in the scenery around the village and finish around 1.30pm at Coromandel, Bethesda Street, where everyone will have a picnic lunch. Please book by 20 July. On Saturday 28 June 2014 we have arranged a coach trip and walk to Avebury. We will collect from Sonning Common and Pangbourne, drive to Avebury stopping at 10 miles and 5 miles from our destination for walkers to continue into Avebury on foot along part of the Ridgeway.
We will have some time in the village to visit the stone circle and Avebury Manor all managed by the National Trust. If you prefer to stay on the coach and spend the whole day in Avebury, then you are welcome to do so. Our Autumn walking weekend will be based at The Pines Hotel in Swanage, which is highly recommended. We have great rates: dinner, bed and breakfast is £74:00 per head per night for the Friday and Saturday night; an extra night is available at same price if booked with the group booking. On Saturday 7 June we have a stall at the League of Friends of the Royal Berkshire Hospital Annual Summer Fete in Tilehurst, which starts at 11:00am and finishes at 4:00pm. Please come along to support us and any help manning the stand would be gratefully appreciated. This is a good opportunity to publicise the Pang Valley Group and we might attract new members. This year’s AGM will be held at Sonning Common Village Hall at 1.30pm on Sunday 23 November 2014 following the Annual Walk, Social and Lunch.
